The Language & Culture Class is designed to provide students with basic Japanese language skill and to prepare students to make the most of their overseas trip to Japan. We find that that students that participate in the class are more relaxed in Japan, more appreciative of cultural differences, more considerate of Japanese people, and more willing to try new foods and experiences.
The language component focuses on practical Japanese skills that the students can use in Japan such as introducing themselves, asking for directions, ordering food, shopping, etc. The cultural component introduces Japanese cultural norms and explores the kinship, religious, educational, artistic, political, economic, and recreational patterns of Japan.
The course is a great way to become more familiar with Japanese culture. It is an opportunity to address potential anxiety or culture-shock in a comfortable and supportive environment in advance of the in-country experience and also a wonderful chance to make friends and get to know the team that will be travelling together!
In addition to classroom lessons, there are also opportunities to participate in events with the Regina Japanese community, try Japanese cuisine, and investigate a topic of interest to each participant.
In 2023, our program received Saskatchewan Ministry of Education approval for Dual Credit status. In short, this allows students in grade 9-12 to have their course learning count as an elective credit (9560 Japanese (DC) 10L) towards their high school graduation requirements.
The 2025-2026 class will begin in September 2025 and will run most Saturday afternoons from 1:30-4:45pm at the University of Regina.
The $200 course fee is due on the first day of class. We invite those interested in joining the program to share their contact information here.
